A few Sundays ago I went for a motorbike ride with a group of bikies. Now these weren't the dark and dangerous Banditos or Rebels motorcyclists.. rather the Saints. A christian orientated bike group based in Roeville, the Pilbara region of WA. Don't let that fool you, these guys were still physically quite intimiating. Not helped by their ridiculously thick and somewhat chunky leather jackets, gloves and pants.
Given it was a late 30's degree day up in Port Hedland, I thought they might bring out their 'summer' version of the leathers. Alas no. For the next hour, everytime we stopped, I put myself on fainting duty.. ensuring these tough bikie men didn't keel over as a result of overheating in their leather outfits. Obviously, safety is a factor in one's gear, but there is a stark difference in 'bikie' dress to that of a Ducati driver.. The later seems to spruse up quite nicely.
Having just read up on motocycle leathers, it seems kangaroo is much more breathable and dynamic than cowhide. I hope the person designing the net lot of Saints gear (and no doubt other bikie groups) will consider alternative fabric and design! Maybe something more streamlined?
